MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Another member of the Wood family has been arrested and charged with sex crimes. Chessie Wood was arrested Thursday, June 28 by the Mobile County Sheriff's Office and charged with two counts of sodomy and one count of sex abuse of a child less than 12.
Wood appeared before Judge George Hardesty Friday morning for a bond hearing. Hardesty set a bond of $65,000 and ordered Wood to have no contact with the alleged victim.
Prosecutors told the judge that the victim around 10-years-old at the time of the abuse. Investigators tell FOX10 News the alleged victim came forward months ago, claiming Wood had abused her. The investigation authorities say has been going on since January.
"I've been with this woman for almost 12 years, and we've got two babies, and I've never known or seen her mess with any kid," said Paul Houseknecht, Chessie Wood's husband.
Wood is the mother of missing teen Brittney Wood, who has been missing since May 2012. Shortly after Brittney went missing, five Wood family members and one family friend were arrested in a child sex ring investigation in Baldwin County.
"Lies, I think it's trying to be some kind of revenge," Houseknecht said.
Investigators told FOX10 News the alleged victim came forward months ago claiming Wood had abused her. The investigation, authorities said, has been going on since January.
Chessie Wood has said from the beginning she thinks the sex crimes and her daughter's disappearance are connected.
"I'm going to get her out of jail, then hire an attorney to get her through this. Then another attorney about suing for falsely accusing," Houseknecht said.
The trial for Giuseppe Pino LoPorto continues today in Baldwin County. LoPorto, now 80-years-old, faces several sex abuse charges against a child dating back to the early 90s.
