MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Funeral arrangements are set for a 4-year-old boy killed in an accidental shooting on Easter Sunday.
Roderick Paige told FOX10 News he and his family had just left Easter Service at his mom's church Sunday, and were headed to the park. They decided to make a stop at a relative's house first.
"We were there about two minutes, and it happened that fast, and him thinking that a real gun was a toy gun and pow," Paige said.
The child's father said that's all the time it took for 4-year-old Roderick Paige, Jr. to find a loaded gun and shoot himself in the chest.
"He was a happy, special child," Paige said.
According to the district attorney, the gun belonged to the aunt's boyfriend, who is also a convicted felon.
Paige said he isn't angry or bitter about his son's death, but he believes it could have prevented.
"Everybody should have the right to protect their own home. But everybody should know if you have children in your home, that it should be put away. And my children wasn't the only children there. It was children there before my children got there. If it didn't happen to my child, it could have happen to somebody else's," he said."As far as criminal charges, I leave that up to the police."
District Attorney Ashley Rich said the boyfriend could face possible criminal charges in connection with the shooting. She expects to know the answer by the end of the week.
The child's funeral is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Prayer Tabernacle Early Church of Jesus Christ at 1223 Mobile Street.
A special account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank to help the family with funeral and other expenses. The family did not have life insurance. Donations can be made to New Hope Developmental Outreach in care of Roderick Paige at any Wells Fargo Bank Branch, account #2000031581583.
