DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. - For many people who work near Dauphin Island Bridge, every day at work can be a reminder of tragedy. The view from the Cedar Point Fishing Pier was once majestic for employees Wayne Sprouse and Jo Chesney. But what Lam Luong did on January 7, 2008, changed that forever.
"They should've thrown him off," said Sprouse. "That's what they should've done." "It's sad," added Chesney. "It's something he has to live with whatever time he has left."
It's been more than a year since that tragic incident, but for Chesney and Sprouse, every time they cross the Dauphin Island Bridge, they think about what happened.
"I live close by and I think about it every day," said Chesney, who's worked at the pier for 12 years. "I think everybody who was here when it happened, they'll always remember that every time they cross this bridge."
Sprouse agreed, "I go across that bridge every day. It brings emotion. To think it's just a little child to be thrown off that bridge like that, it's just unreal."
New visitors to the pier often serve as reminders. "They put stuff at the end of the bridge, like toys. They still do that. People come by and really want to know what all that stuff is and we have to tell them."
