ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) - UPDATE: The Escambia County Sheriff's Office said the second dog officials have been looking for since the attack has been caught. The dog was captured around 6:30 a.m. Friday, July 19.
An Escambia County, Fla. woman is in serious condition after she was brutally attacked by a pit bull right outside her home on Jakes Road in Nokomis.
Stanley Keith Pope Jr. told FOX10 News two of the three pit bulls involved in the incident on Thursday, July 18, were strays that his aunt, 63-year-old Sandra Lambert, had taken under her care.
"They wanders up so she started taking them in and started feeding them and taking care of them and everything," Pope said.
Pope said Escambia County Animal Control captured one of the two strays. The other viciously attacked Lambert.
A family dog named "Buddy," also a pit bull, got in between Lambert and the ferocious stray in an act to protect her, said Pope.
The pit bull attack killed the family dog and left Lambert with severe injuries. Lambert was LifeFlighted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center where she is in serious condition as of Thursday evening.
Pope said this is not the first time one of the dogs has shown aggression.
"The white dog already bit her one time, and we told her she needed to get rid of them," Pope said.
Escambia County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Sena Maddison said an attack this severe is rare.
"This is an especially vicious attack.I haven't seem something like this in quite a while," Maddison said.
Pope has not been able to talk to Lambert since she was taken to the hospital, but he said he knows she is very proud of Buddy.
"That's the dog that saved her life. He attacked the other dog and got the other dog off of her," Pope said.
The pit bull that attacked Lambert is still on the loose.
"Animal control was able to take control of one of the dogs, the other one escaped. We are still at this time looking for this dog.The community is our eyes and ears. They'll find the dog before anybody," Maddison said.
