MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile BayBears have a ton of history filled with lots of success, especially after back-to-back Southern League Championships, but recently the news for the program has only gotten better.
This week eight BayBears were named Southern League All-Stars
"Every single one of those guys that made the all-star team, they deserved to be on it. Nobody handed them anything, they went and took it and fought for it. Nobody got anything based on the stature in the organization or stature in baseball -- they went and laid claim to it -- and that's what we're going to try to continue to do in the second half and also in the championship again this year," said BayBears Manager, Andy Green.
"Eight all-stars is great. I think there are two other teams in the league that have 8 in the northern division. In the southern division, we lead the way with eight. When you win the championship you expect to have a lot of players as all-stars -- but from the pitching to the infielders and outfielders -- really across the diamond we've had great performances all year," said BayBears GM, Heath Bennett.
The good news kept rolling in for the team when Manager Andy Green and starting pitcher Archie Bradley were selected for the prestigious MLB Futures Game.
"It's a great honor to be able to go back to a major league field and be a part of the future of the game -- I think there were nine guys who were in the futures game who participated in the all star game the following year -- it's exciting to see those stars be developed -- and to be a small part of that will be fun," said Green.
"It's very cool, it's definitely an honor. I consider myself very blessed to be in this position. Andy is definitely someone I look up to, he's one of the best managers I've had in pro baseball so far. And just the approach he brings and his managing style -- and the way he interacts with his players, he makes everyday fun," said pitcher, Archie Bradley.
"Being named into the futures game is huge honor, and Archie and Andy are absolutely deserving. I think there's a little something special for Andy being that he played his last major league games with the NY Mets," said Bennett.
