MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The family of a Mobile grandmother who was gunned down during a robbery is speaking to FOX10 News.
Lai Robinson, 65, died at a local hospital hours after a shooting at her home along Latimer Lane on June 25.
Relatives said the Vietnamese mother and grandmother lived in south Alabama for several years with her family. In fact, they said Robinson had just recently become a citizen.
"Imagine how happy she is. Imagine how happy she was. She just got her citizenship two weeks before this happened," said Robinson's grandson, who asked not to be identified. "Now her life's just gone."
Relatives said they broke the tragic news to Robinson's elderly husband, who resides at a nursing home.
Her grandson told FOX10 he was at the residence Tuesday June, 25 when two men approached their front window.
Robinson was known by the neighborhood children for selling snacks, soda, and candy out of her home. Witnesses said the two men were looking to purchase some items.
"They're all looking through the window because they see me back there, and then they left. They came back in 30 minutes and busted out the window," he said.
Authorities said one of the male suspects fired multiple shots through the window.
Police said both were seen running away after stealing a little bit of cash from the home.
Meanwhile, neighbors said Robinson was a compassionate and loving woman whose concern was always for the children in the community.
Many parents had to explain the tragedy to their young ones.
"They ask me yesterday ‘Did Miss Lin Lin die?' I said ‘No,'" said neighbor Leroy Edwards. "This morning, I find out she died. It hurt."
"She's a good person," said Robinson's grandson. "She has never done anybody wrong. I feel like I was here last night and it should have been me that was gone."
Police continue their homicide investigation and ask anyone with information to give them a call.
