The school year is moving right along! Our kids are busy learning all kinds of new things. And, as I know you can attest, some of that learning takes place at home with homework. Experts say homework is a really important part of the learning process because it teaches our children things like independence, confidence, responsibility, focus and organization. But, let's be honest here. Book bags full of homework assignments -- on top of extra curricular activities, meals, family time -- well, it can be tough to balance sometimes, right?
Ashley Norris works with teachers at the University of Phoenix. They focus on homework's role in education. She says the key to getting it all done is to make a plan.
Ashley explains, "on Monday when everyone gets home from school it's usually mapped out. The teacher has which quizzes, tests, long-term projects are due that week. Actually create a plan determining what time of day you are going to work on this. You have a big test on Friday, how are you going to prepare? So, those time management skills are essential for parents and kids."
Ashley says the environment is a huge factor, and things should be the same each day. That routine will help our children settle in to get the work done. Also, we should try to let our kids do all of the work themselves. Ashley says that's how they learn skills like independence and responsibility. She says that also helps us know what they know, and if there are areas they either -- need extra help with -- or really enjoy. We can use that information to help them with their educations.
