MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - UPDATE: November 17 - Bond has been denied for John Dortch, the suspect in the murder of Domino's employee Russell Allen. Allen was shot during an attempted robbery on November 4. He died the next day.
Also, Dortch's family told the court that he is on medication for mental illness.
November 15: In the middle of a downpour, 18-year-old John Earl Dortch was led to a waiting police car.
Wearing a white polo shirt, the teen smiled and told reporters he was "happy."
Police Chief Tyrone Williams said it's a bad day and he isn't talking about the weather.
"You have a 21-year-old that was working to support himself, and he was killed trying to do that. And then you have an 18-year-old that will spend the rest of his life in prison if he is convicted," said Chief Williams.
Dortch is charged with gunning down Domino's Pizza employee Russell Allen earlier the month on Dauphin Island Parkway. Allen died the next day at a local hospital.
Police said Dortch went to the fast food chain with the intent of robbing the place. Instead, they said he took Allen's life.
The teen denied any involvement.
Police said a tip helped track down the Williamson High School student in the 900 block of West Tanglewood Drive Monday morning.
Police aren't sure if there is a connection between Dortch and other fast food robberies that happened the night Allen was killed.
"We're not sure if he's connected to any other robberies. Detectives are interviewing and will go over the details with him," said Chief Williams.
Despite being handcuffed and possibly spending the rest of his life in prison, Dortch said "he's happy."
"I'm happy," said Dortch, "Still got a lot to be thankful for, Y'all can't take away my joy."
Dortch is charged with capital murder. He is due in court Wednesday for a bond hearing.
