SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) - An Army staff sergeant and his family have a newly remodeled home, thanks to Building Homes for Heroes.
The organization has been working with Staff Sgt. Aaron Hale and his wife, Kelly, since June 2012 to modify the home, which was donated by Chase Bank.
Staff Sgt. Hale was injured when an Improvised Explosive Device, or IED, exploded in his face, blinding him.
Months later, his wife, Kelly, was diagnosed with skin cancer.
"Getting to our own home and finding our new normal, it's been quite a journey," said Staff Sgt. Hale.
The Hales' dream came true thanks to the organization, who upgraded the kitchen of the Santa Rosa beach home, built a bathroom and even put in additional rooms for the couple's four children.
"The moment I walked through the doors, I felt an enormous lift off of my shoulders. I just felt my heart beating a little faster," Kelly Hale said.
The organization also pays for their children to have transportation to and from school.
The Hales moved in on April 6 and folks from around the community turned out to welcome them.
"People we've never met before came to wish us well and to share in this gift given to us. It was incredible," said Staff Sgt. Hale.
"It was the most beautiful sight I've ever seen. It was amazing. I told them as they came through the door, I just love you all," Kelly Hale said.
Building Homes for Heroes even added a porch and play area in the backyard.
"We can see it in all of our children. Knowing that we're finally home, an incredible burden has been lifted off them," said Staff Sgt. Hale.
The organization also paid for the children to be transported to and from school.
Officials with Building Homes for Heroes say 15 homes in Florida will be donated to wounded veterans by the end of the year.
