PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) - Hundreds came out Saturday to pay their final respects to a beloved barber and minister who was murdered at his business November 22nd.
Family members, friends and fellow worshipers filed into Phillips Temple AOH Church on St Stephens Road Saturday for the home-going service for Reverend Sam Richardson.
Lenie Washam saidshe got a chill when she learned about the murder.
"I been knowing him a long time. He was a nice sweet person, and I don't know hwy somebody would do him like that," Washam said.
That was the same question on many minds as Richardson's favorite hymns filled the sanctuary.
Richardson was the pastor of a small holiness church in Wilcox County, but he was best known in Prichard for his secular work as a popular barber.
Dwight Dunning was a customer and a fellow minister.
"He loved to talk about the Lord. He'd have little seminars in the barber shop and little prayer meetings too. So, he was a real, real nice person," Dunning said.
Police said someone beat Richardson to death during a robbery inside the Barber shop. Investigators believe at least one person stood watch outside.
Representative Napoleon Bracy has set up an account for a reward for information leading to the killers. Bracy is calling on citizens to donate to the account which is up to about 25-hundred dollars right now.
"We want to be very aggressive to try to get these murders off the street. We don't want this case to become cold," Bracy said.
A march is also being organized to bring attention to the murder, and violence in the community.
Reverend Bridgette Anders plans to participate.
"We need to get to a place where we're not going to harbor people who we know that they've done wrong, because somebody in the community knows what happened. Somebody knows," Anders said.
An account for the reward is set up at Commonwealth Bank for "Reverend Sam".
The march will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. It will begin at Richardson's Barber shop on Main Street in Prichard, and will end with a rally at Prichard City Hall.
