MOBILE, Ala. - Is it a tablet? Is it a note pad? Nope, it's a giant smart phone. The first six inch smart phone has been unveiled at the Consumer Reports Electronic show in Las Vegas.
It's called the "Ascend Mate". The phone is the first to feature a six-inch screen. Other companies are making five inch phones. It runs on Android, and reportedly can run for two or three days without re-charging.
Right now, tablets are the high demand item. Tablets are outselling notebooks by more than 30 million devices. It's the fast expansion of different screen sizes that has helped to push that demand. Apple leads the tablet market with the iPad, but they expect smaller tablets to dominate sales this year.
Facebook sent out an invite for an event on January 15th that simply says "Come and see what we're building".
While the invitation is mysterious, the timing of the event during the Consumer Electronic Show has some speculating the company may announce its own smartphone or possibly a new operating system. Sources say engineers from Apple are working on it.
