Here's a look at what's going on this weekend on the Gulf Coast, provided by the folks at the Lagniappe.
Sunday will by a great day for zydeco lovers as 360 Jazz Café will host its first ever zydeco festival. The day starts with brunch at 10:30 and the music begins at noon with Julie Ann Sellers, Mary Loper, Sean Worrell and Leland Clay providing entertainment throughout the day until Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers hit the stage that evening. Tickets are $20.
Also Sunday, over at the Soul Kitchen, you can catch a rare early show with ZZ Ward, whose hit "Put the Gun Down" is burning up the charts around the country. This Oregonian is known for her energetic performances and it's a good time to catch her in a small venue before she gets too big.
Saturday there are a couple of activities that are good for your body and soul as well. In Municipal Park from 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 is the Sickle Cell 5K run/walk which helps raise money for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America.
Also the inaugural Williams Syndrome Poker Run will take place along the Coast as people will drive motorcycles along Highway 90 from Waveland, Miss. and end at Mobile's Harley Davidson Dealership. Along the way there will be stops where riders can pick up cards. The person with the best hand at the end wins a prize. There will be a party with live music at the Harley Davidson parking lot. Participation is just $10 per rider and $5 per passenger.
The Fiesta Beach Bash takes place tomorrow in Pensacola as part of the Five Flags Fiesta celebrating the city's founding. Boaters will gather behind Flounders Chowder House on Pensacola Beach for live music and entertainment. At 3 p.m. a boat parade will commence under the Bob Sykes Bridge and there are cash prizes for the top three winners. Of course there's a great after-party as well.
The trial has begun for accused sex offender Giusseppe LoPorto in Bay Minette. LoPorto spent 14 years on the run in Italy before being arrested and extradited back to Baldwin County in 2012.
