Madilyn Tomaso joined us on Studio10 to talk about receiving The Girl Scout Gold Award.
The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges girls to change the world—or at least their corner of it. To be eligible, a girl must be a registered Senior or Ambassador Girl Scout, complete two age-level Journeys, or one Journey and the Silver Award.
Then she must design and complete a take action project in her community. The project is seven-steps:
- Identify an issue
- Investigate it thoroughly
- Get help and build your team
- Create a plan
- Present your plan and gather feedback
- Take action
- Educate and inspire
The Girl Scouts are recognizing Madilyn Tomaso. For her take action project, Maddie chose literacy as her issue. Maddie is an avid reader, and wanted all children in her community to develop the love of reading that she has. She organized a club at Fairhope High School called the Teen Literacy Council which worked with the local elementary school, the Boys and Girls Club, and the public library to promote literacy. The club is also sending books to children in Africa and Korea. Due to Maddie's hard work and persistence, the TLC is a thriving student organization at Fairhope High. Elementary schools from other communities have already contacted the TLC about working with their students.
Gold Award recipients are part of an elite group of women. Starting in 1916, the best and brightest undertook projects that improved their communities—and the world by earning the Golden Eaglet. The name was changed to the Gold Award in 1980. Since then, the Gold Award has inspired girls to find the greatness inside themselves and share their ideas and passions with their communities.
