ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WALA) - Officials confirmed one person is dead and seven others are injured after a charter bus and car collided on Highway 182 near Perdido Pass. The crash happened in the westbound lane around 4:30 p.m Monday, April 1.
Amber Chitwood said she witnessed the aftermath.
"I heard a big boom. And a lady comes in telling me to call 911! There's been a wreck! The white Honda had come from the Pensacola area (off the bridge) and from the far right lane started drifting over into oncoming traffic. A little before the store, that's when the bus and the car hit," said Chitwood.
Witnesses said the driver of the car didn't survive the crash, identified as Jason Merritt.
"The car went right up under the bus. The car was completely crushed. The poor guy did not make it," said Chitwood.
Witnesses said the bus continued, hitting an electrical box and then to a halt in the pavement.
"It just kind of skidded to a stop, hit our electrical thing and just kind of got stuck right in here. We lost power about half an hour later," said Chitwood.
Assistant Chief Greg Duck of the Orange Beach Police Department said those involved were treated immediately for their injuries.
"From the bus, we had a total of seven people injured. Six of them were taken to local hospitals by ambulance. One was flown to Pensacola by Life Flight. Everybody that went to the hospital were treated and released. The one with Life Flight is in stable condition," said Duck.
Chief Duck said they are conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident.
