BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - Last week, FOX10 News brought you a story about the possibility of a new form of energy in Baldwin County.
Now, the Baldwin County Planning and Zoning Board tabled a request from Virginia-based APEX Wind Energy to build a 328-foot meteorological data research tower south of Magnolia Springs. Even though there is a 180-day moratorium on building any type of wind energy structure in the area, the company still gave it a shot.
"We respect the decision of the commission. We fully support it. We look forward to working with both the county commission and the county planning and zoning commission to get the project responsibly developed in South Baldwin County," said Wade Barnes, development manager for the company.
Barnes said the proposed research tower would the first step to see if the area would truly qualify for a wind farm. If it was built, power would be generated from APEX and sold to local power companies. The result: power to nearly 23,000 homes in Baldwin County. The cost to the homeowner: no more than their current electric bill.
"We would never approach a local utility and demand a price above what the utility is willing to pay. We wouldn't be here if we didn't think we could compete with the current cost of electricity in the area," said Barnes.
The height of the towers is also a concern to some in the area like Baldwin County Commissioner Tucker Dorsey and Mobile Bay Autobahn Society President Jon Borum.
This wind turbine at the Original Oyster House is 55 tall and can power things like their sign and a few lights. In comparison, APEX Wind Energy wants to build 30-40 wind turbines between 500-590 feet tall. That's between the height of the BankTrust building and the RSA Tower in Downtown Mobile.
FOX10 News Meteorologist Jason Smith says height plays a part in wind speed.
"This is a wind resource energy map of the United States. The greatest potential for wind energy is certainly in the Plains from the Dakotas all the way down into Texas with a lower potential for wind energy in our area. However, we do see the sea breeze in our area in the afternoons, especially in the summertime. So we do get a more persistent breeze in South Baldwin County," said Smith.
APEX is expected to bring the proposal back to the Baldwin County Commission after August 19, the last day of the moratorium.
