BALDWIN, COUNTY (WALA) - Now that the Alabama delegates are back from the Paris Air Show and getting back to business, we had a chance to chat with Baldwin County's Economic Development president.
Some may be questioning why so many elected officials went to the Paris Air Show, earlier this month and what's in it for the general public.
"I would hope that they see the benefit in the fact that they have representation in there recruiting," said Lee Lawson, President/CEO Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance.
Twenty-five other states and their delegates competed with Alabama for the same companies and ultimately jobs.
"Our state had a great presence there and I think our presence was duly noted by a lot of companies and execs who said: "Alabama is the talk of the Air Show," said Lawson.
"I sat down with 24 companies, but I talked to at least 40 and they were either suppliers or want to be suppliers for Airbus," said Alabama Governor Robert Bentley.
Lee Lawson says Foley's UTC Aerospace systems already supplies airbus with components for the a-320.
"Initially, we expect for them to gain jobs from Airbus locating here, Also we have a great Aerospace workforce, so we hope that will be a key attractive component to the supply chain," said Lawson.
Lawson says continued investment in specific segments of the economy will make Baldwin County an attractive place for aerospace business.
"We need to continue to prepare the workforce, we need to prepare space Industrial warehouse space, office space, engineering space and engineering talent," said Lawson.\
The county's Mega site will surprisingly not play a role in the airbus supply chain.
"We're really looking for a impactful investment there, not five, ten, fifteen parcels to break it up. Our vision there is a large assembly operation that will bring a lot of jobs and a lot of capital investment on the front end," said Lawson.
Airbus has posted a couple of job openings for the Mobile assembly plant on its web site. The company expects to ramp up hiring later this year.
