ROBERTSDALE, ALa. (WALA) - Before the community stepped up, a local domestic violence shelter feared it'd have to close its doors for good.
The Lighthouse of Robertsdale is a United Way Agency that provides important services to victims of various crimes.
Due to the 16-day government shutdown, Lighthouse had its funding frozen.
That was until Executive Director Joanne Sheils sought the help of the community, and it delivered.
“Our community has stepped forward. I’m proud to be a part of this community," Sheils said. "We have been shown so much support from various foundations, from individuals, from city councils- the city of Daphne, the city of Fairhope, the city of Spanish Fort, Spanish Fort High School. People have really come and helped us out in this time of need.”
Sheils said Lighthouse has taken a big step forward, but they still need plenty of help.
