FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - Decorations were up and dozens of folks turned out to the Fairhope Municipal Pier in celebration of the Independence Day weekend.
The Fourth of July is a day many look forward to all year long.
We decorate our surroundings and even sometimes ourselves to show our pride in our country.
For many, nothing, not even the weather, can get in the way of the festivities.
Dozens of folks flocked to the Fairhope Pier, despite potential rain, for cooking, swimming and plenty of other fun activities.
Officials said if rain did dampen the fun, they only planned to cancel the Baldwin Pops Independence Day concert which was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and play during the fireworks show itself.
The fireworks show continuing is great news for folks like Matt and Ashley Faulkner who came down from Ohio for vacation.
"Hopefully, the rain holds off until after the Fourth of July. It's really nice to get a week's vacation where everything is quiet and you get family time," said Ashley Faulkner.
Some told FOX10 that they're choosing to avoid the traffic and crowds altogether by choosing smaller piers or favorite spots to view the fireworks.
Locals Joel and Penny Shell said the festivities are great for the area.
"It's fantastic. Everyone comes here and spends money and enjoys this beautiful park. It's great that we get a chance to do this," Joel Shell said.
The Shell family said they watched FOX10 and feel much better about the chances of rain.
"Jason Smith assured us it would be good today and rainy Friday and Saturday. So we're looking forward to having a good time," said Joel Shell.
Officials said the Fairhope fireworks show began at 9 p.m.
