ROBERTSDALE, Ala. (WALA) - Authorities said a suspect is sitting in the Baldwin County jail facing a charge that could, if convicted, net him 10 years to life in prison.
Baldwin County Deputies said a report was filed to them by DHR out of Geneva County, Alabama accusing Obie Goodman Wayne Smith, 38, of sexually assaulting a girl under 12 years old.
Major Anthony Lowery said Smith, whose recent arrest record shows he lives on Forest View Drive in Robertsdale, was charged with first degree rape by a Baldwin County grand jury.
“Authorities told us that the actual crime took place in Baldwin County. This case was assigned to investigators and they interviewed the victim and suspect. The victim stated that the suspect repeatedly had sexual intercourse with her over a past few months,” said Lowery.
FOX10 went by his address but no one came to the door.
Neighbors didn’t want to go on camera, but they told FOX10 they were shocked by the news of what Smith was accused of doing.
To protect her identity, authorities aren’t releasing the exact relationship between the victim and Smith, though Lowery said they knew each other.
"The victim unfortunately was put in a situation where she was around the suspect. Every time you see a suspect confess to something like this or if you watch a child who has to come forward and say what happened to them, it’s tough. It’s tough to everyone in the system,” Lowery said.
Smith is being held in Baldwin County jail under a $100,000 bond.
