MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A family attorney says 17-year-old Summer Moody has died.
We're told the teen passed away at USA Medical Center after an infection spread to her brain.
Attorney Robert Stankoski says Summer Moody showed some progress Wednesday morning, but her condition got worse.
In the early morning of April 15, Moody was shot in the back of the head on Gravine Island. Stankoski said the bullet wound became infected, and that infection soon spread to her brain.
"The family was then faced with the very difficult decision of having surgery to remove the infected portion of the brain, which would have eliminated several cognitive functions," Stankoski said.
So the family took her off the respirator. She breathed for a few moments, and then by 10 p.m., she was gone.
The family attorney said plans have not yet been made on a memorial service or funeral.
"The family obviously is devastated. This has obviously been a traumatic experience for them. They're holding up the best they can under the circumstances," said Stankoski.
Inside the Tropical Oasis Tanning Salon, Room 10, found way in the back, is missing its frequent patron.
"She'd walk in the front door, the room lit up. She just had one of those personalities, one of those smiles that was just contagious. She'd walk in, and you'd see that giant smile of hers and whatever was going on in your life at that time, she was gonna make it happy for ya," Tropical Oasis co-owner Michael O'Hara said.
Friends have posted condolences all over Facebook.
A page named ‘#TeamSummer', and another called ‘Prayer Chain for Summer Moody' was filled with messages from family and friends about the loss.
The news spread quickly.
"I woke up, checked my phone and I'd seen the post on Facebook, and I laid in bed for a half hour, just thinking about her," said O'Hara.
Moody graduated from Baldwin County High School in December. She was supposed to walk in the next few weeks.
But now those plans have come to a sudden end, in what O'Hara feels is a senseless tragedy.
