BILOXI, Miss.(WALA) - A local Marine received a hero's goodbye Tuesday, July 2.
William Bramlett, 60, died in a hospital two days after an oncoming car slammed into his motorcycle on the Dauphin Island Bridge.
THE FINAL RIDE
His body was escorted by fellow Marines from a funeral home in Pascagoula to the Biloxi National Cemetery.
More than a dozen members of the Marine Corps League and Patriot Guard Riders on motorcycles gathered at O' Bryant-O' Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula to escort Bramlett on his final journey.
Randy Rushing is a member of the Marine Corps League and a friend of Bramlett's.
Rushing said, "It's quite an honor for me and the Patriot Guard Riders and the Marine Corps League. We're all brother Marines, just about, except for a couple of just close friends."
AN ACTIVE DUTY MARINE TAKES PART
Robbie Reed is an active duty Marine.
He said he didn't personally know Bramlett, but he said it was important for him to be an escort.
Reed said, "Marines since 1775, we've been fighting the good fight, and its just a pride thing. It doesn't matter if you know the guy personally, or him or her. It's just one of those things Marines do: look out and take care of each other."
FRIEND RIDES FROM HATTIESBURG
Rick Nobles was a friend of Bramlett's for years, and came from Hattiesburg, Mississippi to ride in the procession.
Nobles said, "Bill was one of the nicest guys in the world. He's one of those guys you meet, and you automatically like him. There's no if's, ands, or buts about it. He was mild mannered. He was just a great, great guy."
"STREETS OF GOLD"
As the funeral procession began, Rushing reflected on his friend and fellow Marine.
Rushing said Bramlett is walking "the streets of gold. Like they talk about in the Marine Corps Hymn: he's on duty now, I'm sure."
