MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Election officials began documenting absentee ballots just after noon on Tuesday, August 27.
It began with the name on each of the nearly 4,000 ballots read out loud.
"Once all the ballots are scanned, then it's just like as if you were at a regular polling place. The room is locked and I have an office that will stand outside the door until 7 o'clock," said City Clerk Lisa Lambert.
Election officials treated the office at Government Plaza just like a regular polling place. They checked each ballot and made sure they were properly filled out.
Any spoiled ballots are showed to attorneys for both mayoral campaigns and set aside.
It's a strict process that was needed for the election, as U.S. Postal Inspectors continue their investigation into possible voter fraud involving suspicious ballots coming through the mail.
FOX10 News has heard of numerous complaints from voters who were told they had already voted.
"If the voter's list is showing that they have voted an absentee ballot, It's because in our office, when you apply for an absentee ballot we mail a ballot out to you and code it as having voted absentee. if that turns out to be incorrect, while you're there (at the polling place) you can vote on a provisional ballot," said Lambert.
Lambert said provisional ballots are saved until the end and cross-checked to make sure they are legitimate. Election officials said at 7 p.m. they will pull official absentee numbers off the voting machine.
