MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - If you haven't been to the Brookley Aeroplex recently, you might be surprised to see how much work is going on at the Airbus Assembly Facility.
We were just out here about a week and a half ago, and construction crews put in the first vertical steel column.
A lot has happened since then, and, at least one new business has already set up shop near the site.
The Airbus Assembly Plant is taking shape, and, right now, the shape looks like a structure with ornamental canopies on top.
Construction is moving at a quick pace at the site, according to the owners of Saucy Q Bar B Que, who have been selling food from their truck near the plant for months.
Darnell Wingfield said, "These guys are so fast, you know. It's like they did this in four days, just this canopy part."
Darnell Wingfield, Jr. said, "It's going pretty fast, I mean, it has surprised me a lot, and my father."
As work has progressed on the assembly plant, Wingfield said business has picked up.
He said, "Honestly when we started out, it was about 12 or 13 people a day. Now, we're looking at 75-80 people a day."
A NEW BUSINESS AT BROOKLEY
Meantime, a new restaurant called the Runway Café opened two months ago at Brookley.
Owner Dana Davis leased space in a building not far from the assembly site, and not far from the Alabama Aviation Center, a training facility.
Davis said, "We're not as busy as I know we're going to be, so, we're already making preparations to hire more staff."
Davis said she's enjoyed watching how quickly the assembly plant is being built.
WATCHING THE SKIES
Others who work at Brookley said they've have been surprised at the pace of construction.
Rick Hudson, a ship supplier, said, "It's amazing how many people, and how much construction, is going on at one time. It's so fast, you don't really ever think about it until you come back the next day, and there's something different."
