MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Airbus assembly plant being built in Mobile is officially reaching for the skies.
The facility officially began taking shape last week as the first steel column at the Brookley Aeroplex was raised to a vertical position.
The steel support rises 100 feet into the air, and Airbus officials said its the first of many that will form the frame for the Final Assembly Building.
Airbus Site Director David Trent told a meeting of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce last week that vertical work was about to start.
He said on Tuesday, "You might see some vertical stuff starting in the next few days. A lot of the foundation work is being done. If you've been out to Brookley and seen a bunch of piles of dirt, you're going to start to see some vertical stuff go up here pretty quickly."
In the meantime, the company continues to hire and is accepting applications for three positions. It's looking for liaison engineers in the areas of installation, structure, and systems.
All three positions require a minimum of 10 months training at Airbus facilities overseas.
You can apply for the jobs through AIDT, an agency that works with the Alabama Department of Commerce.
