DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WALA) - Waves crashing on the Shore of Dauphin Island are a sign something's brewing in the Gulf. Thursday, October 3 the surf was up, the water closed and the beach deserted.
Not many people were out and about except for sight seers, and Jim Druhan who was boarding up his home.
“We’re boarding up the windows, and I had prepared each window with these boards fitted and the screws with the wing nuts so it should go up pretty fast,” Druhan said.
Druhan doesn’t expect the storm to be bad, but he just built a house on Dauphin Island after Hurricane Katrina demolished the one he previously owned. Thursday he said it was premature of him to board up, but he’s practicing protecting his home for the future which could mean high winds and a lot of rain.
One of the major concerns on Dauphin Island is flooding especially on the West End. Some puddles were forming and water was creeping over parts of the road but it isn’t covered yet.
“Our people are pretty storm savvy. They’ve been through this before we just ask they stay vigilant and don’t panic but take the necessary precautions,” said Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier.
Most people on the island are just keeping an eye on the weather and hoping Karen weakens before she hits land.
