MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - They might come home a little dirtier than when they came to school, but students at Dawes Intermediate don't mind. They are taking their lessons outside, lessons they could use well past their school days.
Principal Michele McClung said she wanted her students to learn about living a healthy lifestyle while learning about science in the real world. McClung said she built the facility with $150,000 in grants and donations.
McClung said every employee at the school has a garden and the kids have a hand in all of them. She said the facility has lights, sound, an amphitheater and outdoor classroom capabilities.
The school will be having a garden workday October 21 where the public is welcome to come lend a hand. McClung said that was another reason she had the garden idea, to get the community back involved in the school.
McClung said she is hoping to partner with the Alabama State Agriculture Commission for more funding to take the garden even further.
