MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WALA) - Unemployment claims from federal workers have jumped in Alabama.
Since the government shut down Tuesday, Alabama Department of Labor officials say 260 federal workers have filed for unemployment benefits. Normally, there are about four or five claims. The number is expected to go up as the shutdown continues.
There are more than 40,000 federal workers in Alabama.
However, if you do decide to collect unemployment while you're on furlough, Communications Director Tara Hutchinson said there's something you should know if you receive back pay when you return to work.
"If the pay is restored, then any unemployment compensation benefits that were awarded are going to be considered an overpayment and they will need to be paid back to the department," Hutchinson said.
Federal workers can only apply for benefits by phone. That number is 866-234-5382.
You'll need a copy of your 2012 W-2, or your most recent pay-stub and the "Standard Form 50" when you call.
