MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - An 11-year-old girl is in serious condition after being hit by a bullet that came through her bedroom window Sunday night, September 22.
Family members said 11-year-old Treasure Ruffin had a second surgery Monday, September 23, to try to remove a bullet that went through her heart and a lung.
The child was at home in her bed when she was hit by gunfire from outside.
"My mom said she heard three shots," said Jeffrey White.
White said his daughter lives with his mother and Grandmother on Hurtel Street. While gunfire is sometimes heard there, no one expected what happened Tuesday night.
"One came through the window. I guess my baby, she was sitting on the bed watching TV and it hit her in the chest, in the heart really. She got up and ran to the front and told my mama she been shot," White said.
White said Treasure had just started sixth grade at Mae Eanes Middle School. The school is just few yards from the child's home.
"She was happy, she couldn't wait. She was ready to go to school every morning," he said.
White's daughter was lying in the direct path of the bullet that went through the window frame. If the bullet had hit just about any place else on the brick home, his child might have been spared.
Police said they have no reason to believe someone fired intentionally at the home. Investigators don't know if the shooting is related to any other crimes in the area.
"She's doing better than what I thought she would be doing. I can say that," White said.
Police have no idea what may have sparked the shooting outside the child's home.
If you have any information that might help them find the person or people responsible, call Mobile Police.
