MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The University of South Alabama Children's and Women's hospital held an open house Sunday for its new 73 million dollar addition.
The doors were opened at the USA Children and Women's Hospital. It was the day for the community to come out and see the 195,000 square foot addition that nearly doubles the size of the hospital. Both of Alexandra Collier's daughters were born at USA. She was impressed after touring the new addition.
"It's really nicely done. I mean everything is new, it's state of the art. I mean it's like you're at home," Collier said.
Hospital Administrator Owen Bailey said the Children's and Woman's hospital has a special mission that is enhanced by the expansion.
" It's a facility that's designed with the family in mind. It's a Pediatric Tower, our staff visited some of the leading Children's Hospital's nationally to find out how we could better serve the entire family," Bailey said.
Bailey said, with nearly 27 hundred deliveries each year USA Children's and Women's Hospital is a leader in births in the Mobile area and the hospital has the regions only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and much more.
"There's a place for both parents to spend the night. There are two Ronald McDonald family rooms in the hospital to allow some of those services for families who need a place to get away inside the hospital. We have classrooms and areas for teaching and community education. We have a new Tree House that's part of our class child life program," Bailey said.
Brian Bonner and his wife have been doing some unique volunteer work at the hospital every since their son was diagnosed with brain cancer. They bring in some favorite cartoon characters to cheer up the children. Bonner said it started as a way to help his own son and he was touched by the other children's response.
"Every since then if we can come up here and get the kids minds off being in the hospital for five minutes, ten minutes whatever it takes, that's where all this comes from," Bonner said.
There was a WII dance lesson in the new hospital classroom Sunday. It's just one area of the new addition where sick children get to experience their normal activities during their treatment and recovery.
The new addition will officially open to patients in early October.
