KITTERY, Maine (AP) - The Navy's director of undersea warfare says the USS Miami will be inactivated at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, minimizing any impact on workers.
Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge said Wednesday that he anticipates that there will be little or no impact on the shipyard's workforce in Kittery, Maine. He also said the Navy will work with Congress to find extra work for Electric Boat, a Connecticut-based submarine builder playing a major role in the repair. That could include performing maintenance on USS Providence.
The Navy announced Tuesday evening that it was reversing course, opting to scrap the Los Angeles-class submarine instead of repairing it.
The Navy cited budget cuts and cost overruns. The sub was severely damaged by a fire that was set by a shipyard worker in May 2012.
