MOBILE, Ala .(WALA) - A small stretch of the Mobile River has been in the national spotlight three times recently.
As the crippled cruise ship Triumph made its way up the Mobile River February 14, no one could foresee what would follow the ship's arrival. At the time, the news was all about the 4,000 passengers and crew wanting to get to dry land after five hellish days at sea.
The next morning, tugs guided the Triumph to the other side of the Mobile River to BAE Shipyard Systems to be repaired.
That's where the crippled ship stayed until tragedy struck earlier in April.
On April 3, high winds caused the Triumph to break its moorings and move across the river.
The ship hit a pier shortly after it broke loose, causing two shipyard workers to fall into the water below.
One of those workers, Buster Johnson, died.
"He was a good man, and he loved the Lord and I guess this was the Lord's will saying come on home," said Bernadette Johnson, the victim's wife.
Then exactly three weeks later, tragedy struck again.
