MOBILE, Ala.(WALA) - A Mobile mother spent some time in Mobile Metro Jail on a curfew violation charge.
Kimberley Seaman, 47, said her son violated curfew in 2012, and she was given a ticket.
She said her son snuck out the house around 3 a.m, stole her keys and went for and decided to go on a joy-ride in her car.
A neighbor spotted her son, and Seaman said she called the police. Authorities gave Seaman a ticket for curfew violation.
"I'm all upset and hysterical and scared because my son can't drive, girl, and then they put it all on me, and I'm turning him in for stealing my car," said Seaman.
A warrant was issued for her arrest and jail records show she turned herself in Monday, July 1.
The Mobile Police Department said just like any other ticket, if you don't pay the fee or show up in court for a curfew violation ticket a warrant will be issued for your arrest, even if your child is out in about without your knowledge.
"Well, I can't treat him like a dog and chain him up while I'm asleep," said Seaman.
Mobile Police Department spokesperson Cpl. Chris Levy said its goal is not to ticket parents when they catch kids breaking curfew.
"They (officers) can simply explain to them what's going on. They can issue a warning. They can take them back to school. They can take them back home, take them to the curfew center," said Levy.
MPD said they are trying to keep kids from getting into trouble; but they need some help.
"We do need parents to be parents. Raising kids starts at the house. We have things to do we don't necessarily have time to raise your kids however this law does give us an opportunity to help the parent if they need it," said Levy.
Seaman also had a warrant for her arrest on a theft of property charge.
Police have detained 86 kids on curfew violation so far this year. The youngest was 11 years old.
