MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - There's word that one of the biggest airline companies in the world will be buying the type of planes scheduled to be built at the Airbus facility under construction in Mobile.
Airbus officials announced Wednesday, September 4, Delta Air Lines made a major purchase. That will mean more work for employees here when the facility is up and running.
THIRTY A-320 AIRCRAFT ORDERED
Airbus officials announced Delta Air Lines has placed a firm order with Airbus for 30 A321 aircraft.
Mobile's Airbus Site Director David Trent said, "The timing is about right. We can expect a good portion of those to be built here in Mobile."
When you hear any number in the A-320s, think of Mobile, because that's the type of plane to be built there.
They seem to be very popular among airlines.
Trent said, "On the A-320 family of aircraft, we have some 4,000 aircraft on order. We have some 5,600, almost 6,000 airplanes, delivered and another 4,000 on order, which is a really comfortable place to be as an airplane manufacturer."
A330 AIRCRAFT ALSO BEING ORDERED
However, Airbus has announced Delta is also buying ten A330 aircraft. People already employed at the Airbus Mobile Engineering Center are working on the interior of those planes and other types of aircraft.
They do cabin and cargo work, which means, according to Trent, "different portions and parts of the cabin: a lot of ceiling panel work, some seat work, some floor covering work, some galley, some lavatories, things that you touch and feel as a normal person would see in an airplane."
AIRBUS IS HIRING
Airbus officials have already filled several management positions in Mobile and are advertising for others.
Hiring is done through AIDT, a division of the Alabama Department of Commerce.
Trent said, "We continue to have employment opportunities out there at the AIDT website. There will be more posted in the coming weeks, so, there's a lot of activity going on."
IN THE FUTURE
Airbus officials said they expect to employ about a thousand people when things get underway and the first airplane should roll off the assembly line in 2016.
