MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Monday, dignitaries from around the world will be in Mobile for the historic groundbreaking ceremony for the new Airbus facility at Brookley Aeroplex.
The April 8 ground breaking on the assembly line plant is an event the Mobile community has been anticipating since Airbus announced it would be coming to Mobile in July of 2012.
"This is a very significant day for Airbus and the community and we look forward to celebrating that and getting to work on this project by celebrating ground on this Airbus assembly line for mobile,' said Clay McConnell with Airbus Americas, Inc.
Sunday night, April 7, an A-320 plane landed at Brookely Field and officials say it will serve as a backdrop for Monday's announcement. It's the same type of plane the Mobile facility will build.
Many details of the ceremony are being kept secret until Monday's groundbreaking and McConnell said the ceremony will have some surprise elements.
Monday's ceremony demonstrates the project is underway and Airbus is ready to get to work on the promised $600 million factory.
The 2-year construction phase is estimated to create 2,500 jobs and aircraft assembly is scheduled to begin in 2015.
