You're getting ready to send your kids back to school, and you want them to have a nutritious lunch. Chris Jackson, a Nurse Practitioner at Eastern Shore Weight Loss says packing a lunch for your kids to take to school is always a good idea. Starting early will help your children establish healthy eating habits for life.
Jackson says packing soup for your kids, or sandwiches or wraps made with whole wheat tortillas is a good place to start. She says you should add lean cold cuts or lowfat cream cheese to the whole wheat bread or wrap. You can even add your child's favorite veggies.
Water is always the best option when it comes to what drink to add to your child's lunch. You can freeze it if your child has a lunch time later in the day to keep everything cold in his or her lunchbox. If you want a little flavor, Jackson says drink mixes like Crystal Light are a good option.
A good snack option would be trail mix made with, nuts, pretzels, and dried fruit. Cottage cheese or a low fat cheese spread on whole wheat crackers is also healthy. Some days of the week, you may want to pack low fat yogurt or yogurt smoothies in your child's lunchbox. Other good snack options are baby carrots, celery sticks, or apple slices with low-fat dips.
