It sounds like a PR stunt, but PayPal says, with companies like Virgin Galactic and Space X bringing a trip to Mars closer to reality, it's very serious about getting into the growing field of space tourism.
PayPal launched the Galactic initiative on Thursday, June 27. To help popularize the idea, it's partnered with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI ) and the Space Tourism Society .
The Galactic Project coincides with the 15th anniversary of PayPal's founding. Just don't go trying to book a flight into space with the idea you can use PayPal to pay for stuff just yet. It's still unclear if regulatory and technical questions can be resolved before that happens.
PayPal is owned by eBay. The company says it currently services more than 128 million active accounts in more than 190 markets around the world.
