NEW YORK, (AP) - Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton has been suspended two games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball after he was ejected from a game this week.
League vice president Joe Garagiola announced the punishment Saturday. Upton has already decided to appeal, putting his suspension on hold.
Upton was ejected by umpire Chad Fairchild after striking out leading off the ninth inning Wednesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays. Upton had slammed his bat and helmet to the ground and had to be restrained by third base coach Tom Foley.
Upton also threw several other items, including his arm guards, toward the plate area while heading toward the dugout.
Rays manager Joe Maddon had been ejected earlier in the game.
