CHICKASAW, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama State Troopers have released new information concerning an accident that involved a Chickasaw police officer.
Troopers said the investigation shows the officer, who was responding to a burglary call, ran a stop sign. They said the officer's cruiser collided with a car driven by Daneica Vassel. Her two children were also in the vehicle with her.
Soon after the accident, the Chickasaw Police Department told FOX10 News the early findings of their investigation.
"That lights and sirens were on, activated on the patrol car, as they were en route," said Sgt. Tommy McDuffie with the Chickasaw Police Department.
Alabama State Troopers said, however, there was no indication of an active siren at the time of the crash. They also said there are still conflicting reports as to whether the cruiser had its blue lights on or off when the crash occurred.
The report also stated Vassell, was going faster than the posted speed limit at the time of the crash.
Cheryl Tucker was named as a witness in the report. She said the lights were not on during the crash.
"The day was even brighter and nicer than it was today. There is no way to mistake that. I've got a lot more to lose than I have to gain," Tucker said.
FOX10 News asked the Chickasaw Police Department for a comment on the report; it could not comment on the accident because of pending litigation and was referred to the city attorney.
The city attorney told us it has not heard from Vassel's attorney regarding a lawsuit. The citrin law firm confirmed it still intends on filing a civil lawsuit soon.
Troopers have also confirmed there is dash camera video of the accident.
