ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) - Many voters considered Wednesday's first 2012 presidential debate a critical point in the race for the White House.
Millions from both sides of the party line were watching as President Barack Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney squared off.
Some along the Gulf Coast said there is an added excitement this political season in Florida. The sunshine state is considered a ‘swing state', and both candidates are battling it out for the 29 electoral votes.
Republican party leaders in Escambia County, Fla., said they felt Florida is critical in this presidential race. They held a viewing party at Monterrey's Mexican Grill, and said they were not disappointed by the turnout.
Romney Campaign co-chair for Escambia County Troy Schoonover said the State of Florida is expected to be a major player in the 2012 Presidential Race, in-part because the state is so diverse.
"Florida is like a microcosm," said Schoonover.
He said the debate showed a very clear difference between President Obama and Gov. Romney's plans for the country.
Wednesday's focus was primarily on the economy; specifically taxes, job growth, and healthcare.
Schoonover said Gov. Romney was prepared and aggressive throughout the debate.
He plans to hold the next two debates at the same location; 5030 Bayou Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32526.
