PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich said at least one of two men involved in the brutal beating and robbery of a store clerk in Eight Mile could be facing an attempted murder charge.
The news comes just a few hours after Prichard Police arrested Zachary Moore as an accomplice in the crime.
Moore was caught on surveillance cameras rummaging through the clerk's purse while a second man pistol whipped her. Moore was charged with first-degree robbery and probation violation.
Police are still searching for the gunman who has been identified as Joseph Caples.
FOX10 showed Rich the surveillance video for the first time.
"It's disturbing. Very disturbing," said Rich."I mean obviously the store clerk is very very lucky. These guys weren't playing."
Police said it appears that Caples tried to pull the trigger during the robbery.
The victim's daughter told FOX10 Caples continued to beat her in a back room, causing the clip in his gun to fall out.
"He tried to kill her," said the clerk's daughter, who asked not to be identified. "She heard the gun click three times and she kept saying I have two grand babies and two daughters that need me."
The victim said Caples replied by saying he ‘didn't care'.
Police said Caples has a warrant out for his arrest for robbery and assault, however the D.A.'s office may seek harsher punishment.
"You brought it to my attention that the victim is saying that some additional information that the detectives did not tell us. In this situation, we understand now that there may have been an intent to actually fire the weapon at the clerk and of that is the case then we would upgrade the charges to attempted murder," said Rich.
The victim said Caples also tried to remove the security system hard drive, however he made off with the wrong equipment.
If you have any information about Caples' whereabouts, call Prichard Police.
