MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Authorities said two University of South Alabama students were arrested after narcotics officers recovered more $20,000 worth of hydroponic marijuana from a post office box.
Mobile County sheriff's deputies said 25-year-old Joseph Auburn Donaldson and 20-year-old Erin Lowery were arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession/ receiving a controlled substance on July 24.
Authorities said Lowery is studying to be a doctor and Donaldson was a baseball player. He was drafted in 2010 to play for the Baltimore Orioles.
Sheriff's deputies said postal workers at the Cottage Hill post office contacted investigators in early July after receiving the suspicious package. Deputies then waited for Donaldson to pick up the drugs.
"They determined that they were fictitious names that these packages were being shipped to," said Mobile County Sgt. Joe Mahoney. "The individual came to pick up the packages and our deputies surveilled post office and were able to approach the individual in the parking lot."
Upon searching Lowery and Donaldson's apartment in west Mobile, authorities said they found hallucinogenic mushrooms, drug paraphernalia, and more marijuana.
Investigators are working with federal authorities to track down the source of the drugs.
Both suspect's have since bonded out of Metro Jail and are due back in court in August.
