MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - It's officially the first day of summer and that means, kids have a lot of free time.
For three days, the University of South Alabama athletic department partnered with City Church of Mobile and the YMCA to give kids a way to stay active when school's out.
"It's just really important for us as a church and other organizations in the community to do a free event for children that may or may not have access to a sports camp of this nature. Something for them to come and have fun. Also, we teach sports skills character development, so it's just a really, really good thing for the children in our community," said Camp Organizer, David Williams.
The fifth annual Mega Sports Camp brought out more than one hundred children.
The kids had the chance to learn first hand from college athletes.
"These college kids and even high school kids have to do community service hours, but these kids just want to be out here. So being able to hook up with a school like South Alabama is a huge opportunity for us, because their name is out there and everyone knows who the Jaguars are. They love it, I've heard nothing but good things come from these athletes and they keep coming back," said youth pastor, Miranda Kibby.
"They are role models for these children so they can look at them and say, these people have gone to college, they are doing well in their studies and well in their athletics and just what a great lesson that is for these children," said Williams.
"We're out here with these kids, sweating it out, having fun and we're having a blast," said Kibby.
Tre Mason rushed for 304 yards and four touchdowns, leading No. 3 Auburn to a wild 59-42 victory over No. 5 Missouri in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday.

Wildlife officials are ceasing efforts to rescue a pod of whales that was stranded in the Everglades after losing sight of the marine mammals. The National Park Service says aerial and boat survey teams could not locate the whales Saturday, a potentially encouraging sign that they have moved farther offshore.
