MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A 15-year-old freshman at Davidson High School said a classmate took a lighter to her hair.
According to police, it happened during a lunch period at the school.
Victoria Parker told FOX10 she was talking with friends when a male student, whom she only recognized as a classmate, approached her and started messing around with a cigarette lighter.
"He jumped up, and he's playing with a lighter, and he brings it over to my face and says 'I'm going to light it. I'm not afraid to light it.' And he lights it, and my hair catches fire," said Parker. "I can feel the heat on my face," she said.
Parker said her hair was smoking and her friends had to help blow it out.
She said she the male student took off after she went to report the incident to school officials.
Parker said school employees were unable to locate the student in question. A spokeswoman for the MCPSS said they believed the student may have left campus after the incident.
Parker said she was sent to class before writing a report at the main office.
The 15-year-old said she was in a panic and texted her mother in the school bathroom.
"My legs went numb," said the girl's mother Tiffany Parker. "I couldn't get to the school quick enough. I re-read the message to make sure I was reading it right. She said ‘He lit my hair on fire."
Tiffany Parker said she had still not been notified of the incident by the time she arrived at the school.
She said she contacted police to fill out a formal police report since the student was still missing.
"I was surprised that they didn't call the police," said Tiffany Parker. "I thought when something like that happened at a schoo,l that the school would call police. I didn't know that they wouldn't."
School officials only said they believed the student may have been messing around and did not intend to singe the girl's hair.
We're told the student will be put on long-term suspension but the mother of the victim is demanding more and plans to sign a warrant for the teen at the youth center Friday morning.
