As you plan your children's summer activities, here is an idea for you -- organize some volunteer work! Do some giving back. It's a great way to fill up some of these long school free days. And, helping others is not only rewarding for the recipient, but also for the helper!
In fact, experts say teaching our children to give back is an important part of parenting. It gives our kids responsibility and they learn what it means to make a difference. It can boost their self-confidence and give them a sense of accomplishment.
There are all kinds of things you can do. Here's one you can do from home! The website is called Send Kids the World . It's designed to brighten the day of a child who has been injured or who has a serious illness. You just have your child send a postcard or a note - easy!
And, you can do things to get the whole family involved, like cook a meal for the families at the Ronald McDonald House. You and children could also volunteer some time at a summer camp.
For example, United Cerebral Palsy's Camp Smile uses volunteers as counselors. You could work with the food bank to help them organize food. You could also get involved with some of our beach clean-ups or volunteer some time at an animal shelter. For more volunteer opportunities, click here for Hands On South Alabama and here for Volunteers of America. And, if you are already planning to volunteer, let us know what you will be doing.
