EIGHT MILE, Ala. (WALA) - This week on Fox Ten Outdoors were headed to Chickasabogue Park in Eight Mile, Ala. It's a hidden natural treasure right here in our own backyard.
Chickasabogue Park is a 1,100-acre outdoor recreation facility and wildlife refuge. It provides a wide variety of outdoor activities in a natural setting.
Canoeing on the local waterway is a great way to relax. You can get a good mile or two up the creek before you encounter logjams. It feels like total wilderness. It's a clean sand bottom stream with lots of birds and wildlife. We stop at a sandbar for some hot tea on the camp stove. It's great on a cold day.
If you like to camp, there are plenty of options. Most sites are pull through, R.V. camping, 47 sites in all. They have places for R.V's and tents, overnight camping, weekly camping, and monthly camping.
We also tried some mountain biking. Make sure you have your pants rolled up and a helmet. There are more than 17 miles of hiking and biking trails wind through hardwood hills, sandy pine flats and across the swamps on wooden bridges. There are yellow trails for biking, and red for hiking. The park also has disk golf, hiking trails and fishing opportunities.
Chickasabogue Park is open from 7:00 a.m until dusk for day-use activities and is open 24 hours for campers. For information on park fees, click here .
