MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Wythe Whiting will soon retire and more than likely spend his days picking up trash.
"They say you will need something to occupy your time. This is a big concern of mine. I've lived here on and off for 50 years and I'd like to see the problem corrected," said Whiting.
The problem: a sea of Styrofoam seeping into Dog River after it rains. Whiting said the trash comes from several spots, one being Moore's Creek and Eslava Creek.
"This problem is getting more serious each year because there is no less trash it is more trash out of parking lots and everywhere else," said Whiting.
The Dog River Clearwater Revival has raised money through fundraising and business partnerships to install litter traps to catch the trash. The traps are $125,000 apiece.
The group would like to see two machines in place.
Whiting said they will solve 90 percent of the pollution problem.
Once they are installed, people must clean them out, put the trash in a bin and haul it off.
Whiting said the organization is $10,000 shy of the money needed to purchase the first litter trap.
