MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - FOX10 obtained surveillance video that shows the final minutes leading up to a deadly confrontation involving an Alabama State Trooper.
Surveillance cameras at a Chevron gas station along Lott Road in Wilmer caught the last known minutes of Garett Chruma's life.
Video shows the 21-year-old stopped at the gas station at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, June 8.
He then walked out minutes later and got on his motorcycle before having a brief conversation with two State Troopers who pulled into the parking lot.
"Whenever he left out of here a state trooper had apparently spotted him taking off on his motorcycle without a helmet doing - the officer said - about 200 mph down this road right here," said Ryan Brannon, who was working the cash register.
Brannon told FOX10 one of the state troopers walked in to the building looking for information about the ‘speeding biker,' who took off.
Video shows Brannon gave the trooper a name and number.
The official then walked out at 7:46 p.m.
"The state troopers took off down the road," said Brannon. "A couple of moments later the police cars, ambulances and everything are going down there."
Authorities said at 8 p.m. that night Alabama State Troopers initiated a short high-speed chase with Chruma along Mason Ferry Road nearby.
Officials have not released many details, but said a foot pursuit followed and then a confrontation between a trooper and Chruma.
Authorities maintain the 21-year-old was armed, although officials have yet to say what he was armed with.
The news hit hard for Chruma's family and friends.
"How would you expect, I mean seriously what would you expect if you found out your son is dead. you hit your knees and you pray to the good god above," said Sherrie Burford, who lives with Chruma's mother.
