MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Family and friends of Wendy Fisher gathered in Cathedral Square on Tuesday to remember her life. The mother of two was gunned down by a total stranger in front of her home on Racine Avenue Saturday night.
Carol, Fisher's mother, got the call Saturday night.
"We went out the door to our next door neighbors, and we banged on the door at 10 something at night. And I'm banging as hard as I can, and I'm screaming, ‘Somebody help us,'" said Carol Fisher.
Just before the shooting, witnesses said Fisher was telling the driver of a speeding car to slow down.
"We were robbed of our daughter. Two children were robbed of their mother and even though we are Christians and we believe in God and God's grace is carrying us through, we can't help but be angry," said Carol Fisher.
Fisher's daughter was at the vigil. With her, a candle that was different from the rest. It was her mother's.
"This is my mom's favorite candle. And she always had it in the living room, and she would always light it," said Fisher's daughter.
She also read a poem she wrote to her mother on Mother's Day. It said in part:
"I don't ever know what I would do without you; so please don't ever go no matter where we drift off, to be everything you are is who I am today."
There were a lot of tears at the vigil, but also smiles. People were recalling fond memories of Fisher.
Friends said it's easy to find memories of Wendy Fisher at The Haberdasher in downtown Mobile, where she worked as a bartender.
"She's been with us since pretty much the beginning here," said owner Elise Poche. "She had a very infectious laugh."
Her daughter remembers the love between her mother and her boyfriend.
"They would always play fight, and she would always scream and she'd, like, kick. And she would come back, and it would be so funny. I loved watching them together," said Fisher's daughter.
The family is focusing on Fisher's spirit and letting law enforcement focus on catching those responsible.
"We want justice. We want justice brought. We want the investigators and the district attorney to take care of this whole thing, and I believe they are and I believe they will," said Carol Fisher.
It's easy for Poche to think about her friend, but she said it's not easy to accept reality.
Fighting back tears, Poche said, "It's very shocking. It's very shocking and senseless."
The crime has touched people all over the community, because it could happen to anyone.
"She was an innocent bystander, and she was a very good person," said Poche.
Fisher's family said they want people in the community to come forward with any information about the suspects.
"The right thing is for you to come forward. The right thing to do is help us resolve this. The right thing is to make sure nobody else's daughter gets shot in the street for something like that," said Carol Fisher.
"What if they hurt someone else's family?" said Fisher's daughter.
A celebration service is being held on Friday at Connect Church in Daphne. All of the expenses have been paid for by anonymous donors.
You can contribute to the family through a fund set up at Regions bank under "Children of Fisher."
