PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) - With a new school year, comes a new football season.
Vigor High School starts two-a-days next week. That's why Vigor Head Football Coach Ashley Johnson and his wife Leslie have decided to jump into action themselves to help the team with much needed equipment
Johnson is taking inventory, and he said he's not too happy with what he sees.
"Some of our shoulder pads are 10-15 years old," Johnson said.
Johnson said enough is enough. He and his wife have started a fundraising campaign aimed at getting his team new equipment.
"We've had several shoulder injuries in the last few years. Three guys have had to sit out an entire year because they had to have their shoulders completely surgically repaired, part of the reason are these old shoulder pads," Johnson said.
Johnson said the last shoulder pads the school received were given to them.
"The last time I knew we've gotten new shoulder pads, or shoulder pads, was probably five years ago and they were some Fairhope was discarding," said Johnson.
Johnson said typically shoulder pads start wearing down after three years and new ones should start to be rotated in.
Vigor plays its football games at Prichard Stadium. It's is the only stadium the high school has which makes a big difference. That means teams like the soccer teams and softball teams have to play all their games away, and they don't bring in money for the school.
"In football, we're glad to help any of our kids. Football gives them whatever they need but it drains, by the end of the year we're broke," said Johnson.
Johnson said they're trying to get the best equipment they can. Coach Johnson and his wife have started a collection on gofundme.com . You can write a message for the team or anonymously donate.
"We've had enough, we love our kids," Johnson said.
