MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Week 4 of the Mobile Fire Rescue's Citizen's Academy taught participants CPR and how to use the Automated External Defibrillator, or AED. Together, if done correctly, they can increase the chances of saving someone's life.
CPR technology has improved drastically over the years, from 30 compressions at 2 breaths to the AutoPulse, with automatic hands-free CPR. When you arrive on the scene, if you can't remember the proper procedures, it can all be found on your phone.
The American Heart Association has made it easy for you to have CPR at your fingertips. The "Hands-Only CPR" app shows you step-by-step instructions for conducting CPR without using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Mobile Fire Rescue spokesperson Steve Huffman said it's important for people to know the signs of someone in need of CPR and when to use the AED.
"Things to look for: check and see if they're breathing, check their pulse. Of course if they're not breathing, they don't have a pulse, then you need to initiate CPR. Also, initiate calling 911. If you can't do it, and there's someone nearby, get them to do it," said Huffman.
Captain in charge of EMS Training, Todd Norsworthy and his new recruits demonstrate CPR with ease. They say to switch with someone every two minutes if possible, to ensure CPR is being delivered the more accurate way possible.
When it comes to the AED you're guided every step of the way. Automated instructions will tell you exactly what to do when applying the AED to the body.
But what if you don't have anyone to help you? What if you don't have an app to give you instructions? The answer, officials said, is think of the song ‘Stayin' Alive' by the Bee Gees and compress to the beat of the song.
